A useful overhead-press sticking-point diagnosis starts with location and timing: shoulders, forehead, or lockout. Film a true side view, mark the first slowdown across several controlled repetitions, and test load, bar clearance, range, and trunk control before adding accessories. Keep a change only when it improves repeatability at a manageable load.

Direct answer and boundary

A sticking point is the part of a repetition where the bar slows markedly, pauses, or reverses under a challenging load. Research on the shoulder press has measured a velocity minimum within a broader sticking region, but the position and size of that region depend on the lifter, load, setup, and protocol.1 A phone video usually cannot measure bar velocity precisely; it can still help you classify where the visible change begins.

Use this order:

  1. Observe: identify the first repeatable change, not the most dramatic frame.
  2. Test the task: reduce load or range, check bar clearance and trunk position, and change one input at a time.
  3. Select a variation: use a controlled variation to compare demands, not to confirm a muscle diagnosis.
  4. Add accessories last: choose them as a training option after the movement test has shown a repeatable limitation.

The goal is a controlled, repeatable, symptom-free press that suits your chosen variation. There is no single bar path, torso angle, grip width, or lockout shape that every body must reproduce. This guide is therefore distinct from general overhead-press form instruction: it is a troubleshooting loop for a particular stall.

What “stalls at” means

Describe the location relative to a fixed landmark. “My shoulders are weak” is an explanation you have not yet tested; “the bar slows within the first hand-width above the shoulders” is an observation you can retest.

These labels describe a phase, not an anatomical cause. A stall can move when grip, range, tempo, fatigue, or variation changes. Do not treat the table as a muscle map.

Side-video landmarks: make the stall observable

Place the camera perpendicular to the bar’s path, around shoulder height, far enough away to show the plates, feet, hips, trunk, head, bar, and elbows. Avoid a three-quarter angle for the main diagnosis; perspective can make the bar appear to drift forward or backward. Keep shoes, bar, load, camera position, and target repetitions consistent between baseline and retest.

Record three to five controlled repetitions that are difficult enough to show the normal problem but not so heavy that every repetition becomes a rescue attempt. A side view does not reveal all asymmetry, so use a front view later if one sleeve appears to rise first. The side view is for timing and the front view is confirmation, not a substitute for an in-person exam.

If clothing or frame rate hides a landmark, record unclear. A precise label based on an oblique or low-quality clip is less useful than an honest retest.

Diagnose before you add accessories

1. Off-the-shoulder stall

If the bar slows immediately after leaving the shoulders, first repeat the setup with a lighter load. Keep the feet, grip, range, and tempo the same. Check whether the bar begins close enough to travel around the face without a sudden forward reach, and whether the ribs flare or hips move before the bar has clearly passed the difficult start.

Run one test at a time:

  • Load test: reduce the load enough to complete three consistent reps. If the bar leaves the shoulders more smoothly, load or fatigue is a relevant condition; it is not proof of a specific muscle deficit.
  • Start-position test: reset every rep from the same shoulder/rack position and film again. A changed rack height or wrist angle can change the first centimetres.
  • Grip test: make one small, symmetrical grip adjustment while keeping all other variables constant. Keep it only if the bar and trunk remain controlled; do not search for a universal hand spacing.
  • Trunk test: use a quiet rib-and-pelvis position that you can maintain, without forcing a rigid posture or leaning back to create momentum.

If the bar still stalls immediately at a manageable load, compare a seated back-supported press as a diagnostic variation. A different result tells you that the standing setup and trunk demand mattered; it does not isolate a shoulder muscle.

2. Forehead-height stall

Forehead-height stalls are often the easiest to misread because the bar, head, and torso pass through a close transition. First ask whether the bar actually slows at that landmark across several reps or whether it only appears to because the camera is not square. Mark the bar’s distance from the face, the head’s movement, and any torso lean.

Then run a controlled comparison:

  1. Use a lighter load and the same start and endpoint.
  2. Let the head move in the way that gives the bar a repeatable path; do not force the head back or push the bar around the face.
  3. Change only one small press-direction or grip variable and film three reps.
  4. Compare the first slowdown, bar-to-face distance, and trunk position with baseline.

If the stall moves or disappears when the load is reduced, keep building the repeatable version before adding more work. If the bar repeatedly drifts forward and the torso compensates, stop trying to “fight through” the line; return to the load and range where the path is controllable. Neither pattern proves that the front deltoid, triceps, or any other named muscle is the cause.

3. Lockout stall

A lockout stall means the bar has passed the earlier transition but does not reach the same final controlled position. Confirm that the endpoint is comparable: an overhead press does not become a lockout test if one rep finishes short and another finishes with a large rib flare. Also note whether the stall appears only on the last rep or after a long pause.

Test the task first:

  • Stop the set one repetition before the visible technique change and see whether the endpoint remains consistent.
  • Reduce the load and keep the same endpoint, without shortening the range to manufacture an easy win.
  • Use a controlled overhead pause or a very light top-position hold only if you can maintain balance and control; it is a practice condition, not a test of joint health.
  • Compare a seated dumbbell or machine press if you need to see whether a more stable setup changes the final range.

Only after those tests should you trial an accessory. A close-grip press, pushdown, or overhead extension may train elbow extension in a different context, but a change in accessory performance does not prove it was the missing link in your barbell press. Select volume according to your programme and recovery, not a universal lockout prescription.

Use the first branch that matches the video. If a branch is unclear, repeat the recording before adding a cue or exercise.

Do not rotate through every variation in one session. Compare one version for a short block, log the range and load, and return to the original press to see whether the observed change transfers. A variation that feels easier may simply remove a demand you were trying to train.

Use the same camera position and a comparable effort. Score consistency from 1 to 5: 1 = changes almost every rep; 5 = same path, stall phase, and endpoint.

Write the first frame of the stall in plain language, such as “slows as bar passes forehead on reps 2–3,” rather than “bad shoulders.” Keep a change only if it improves control or repeatability without adding a new compensation, reducing the intended range, or creating symptoms. Recheck the original press after a variation block; a better variation is a useful training result, not proof that the original cause has been found.

When accessories make sense

Accessories are optional training tools after the task has been tested. If a lockout-range exercise is comfortable and the programme has room for it, you might use it to accumulate practice in that range. If a more stable press allows pain-free work, it may help you maintain pressing volume while you seek coaching or assessment. Neither choice establishes a universal weak muscle or guarantees carryover.

When the video is not enough

Stop the set and arrange qualified assessment when there is sharp or escalating pain, a sudden loss of strength, numbness or tingling, a feeling that the shoulder or elbow is unstable, or loss of balance that makes the bar unsafe. Seek timely clinical advice for symptoms that persist or worsen outside training. Save the video, load, repetitions, and retest notes for the handoff; do not use a self-assigned “sticking point” to decide that a symptom is harmless.
