The biceps brachii has short and long heads that share an insertion at the elbow but originate at different points on the shoulder blade. The long head crosses the shoulder, so shoulder position changes its length during a curl. An incline dumbbell curl places the upper arm behind the torso, but the current references do not establish that it produces greater long-term growth than a standing curl.

Grip also changes which head does more work. A supinated (palms-up) grip, as in the barbell curl or dumbbell bicep curl, maximizes biceps involvement because full forearm supination is one of the biceps’ own actions. A neutral, hammer grip shifts load toward the brachialis and brachioradialis instead, which still contributes to arm size but trains the biceps through a narrower range of active tension; see the hammer curl for that variation and the zottman curl for a single exercise that trains both grips across one set.

Because the long head also assists shoulder extension, direct curl volume is not the only pulling stimulus the biceps receives. Vertical and horizontal back exercises such as the pull-up, lat pulldown, and barbell bent-over row all involve elbow flexion at the finish and contribute meaningful indirect biceps volume, which is worth subtracting before adding a full slate of direct curls on a pulling-heavy week. For a chest-supported way to isolate the biceps without lower-back involvement, the spider curl keeps the upper arm fixed through the entire range. See bicep exercises to sequence these by grip and shoulder position and decide how much direct volume to add on top of your existing pulling work.

Frequently Asked Questions

How often should you train biceps for growth?
Use a recoverable amount of direct curl work and account for pulling exercises that also flex the elbow. Adjust frequency and volume from your performance and recovery rather than using one fixed range.
What is the difference between training the long head and short head of the biceps?
The long head crosses both the shoulder and elbow, so exercises with the arms behind the body like the [incline dumbbell curl](/exercises/incline-dumbbell-curl/) place it under greater stretch. The short head sits on the inner arm and is biased when curls are performed with the arms in front of the body, such as the [preacher curl](/exercises/preacher-curl/) or [spider curl](/exercises/spider-curl/).
Are barbell curls better than dumbbell curls?
Neither implement is universally superior. A barbell allows heavier absolute loading and stable progressive overload, while dumbbells allow natural wrist rotation into full supination and help correct strength imbalances between arms.
